MEASUREMENT OF BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS (SUGAR AND CHOLESTEROL)

We carry out sugar and cholesterol analysis:

  • EASILY: the test is done by our trained and qualified healthcare staff. It is capillary blood sampling through finger prick and the sample obtained is really tiny.
  • QUICKLY: the results for each parameter are ready in just 6 minutes.
  • PRECISELY: the procedure is done using COBAS 10 system. Cobas 10 complies with precision standards indicated by National GlycoHemoglobin Standardisation Program (NGSP) and by National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).

YOUR LIPID PROFILE MEASUREMENT (CHOLESTEROL)

We obtain 4 results in the analysis:

  • LDL complex (known as bad cholesterol), it is a molecular structure which is responsible for transporting huge amount of cholesterol through the bloodstream.  The excess of this cholesterol complex accumulates in arterial walls and it creates ´´lumps´´ that hinder normal blood flow. Hence, it is called bad cholesterol.
  • HDL complex (known as good cholesterol), it is responsible for carrying cholesterol from different parts of the body to the liver for disposal. It cleans out blood vessels from excessive fat dropped off by LDL. For these reasons HDL is called good cholesterol.
  • TRIGLYCERIDES are another type of fat-like complexes. They store energy but their excessive amount is not good for our health.
  • TOTAL AMOUNT OF CHOLESTEROL

BLOOD GLUCOSE MEASUREMENT

In the assessment of your blood sugar level we are able to determine the following:

  • BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL WHEN FASTING: the result obtained shows the level of glucose at the moment of the test.
  • BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL IN LESS OR EQUAL TO 2 HOURS AFTER EATING: the result obtained shows the level of glucose at the moment of the test.
  • GLYCATED HEMOGLOBIN (HGBA1C): This gives us information about sugar levels in your blood in the last 2/3 months. It reflects glucose monitoring in long terms.

It is especially useful for people with diabetes because it shows if there have been any incidents of hyperglycaemia without any symptoms in the last 3 months.

Moreover, it helps establish whether a person is prone to diabetes or already suffers form it since very often this disease shows no symptoms.

How often should I have this analysis done?

CHOLESTEROL

  • Middle aged people (around 45 years old) without any factors of CVD risk: eEvery 1 or 2 years.
  • People over 65 with or without factors of CVD risk: every year.
  • If you have started new medical treatment: it is recommendable to have a check-up after the 6th week.
  • Patients undergoing treatment with lipid-lowering agents: every 6/12 weeks, depending on patient´s adherence and their lipid profile.

BLOOD SUGAR

47% of diabetes cases is yet to be diagnosed and half of the cases is evitable, first step is to have the analysis done.

  • Middle aged people (around 45 years old) without any cardiovascular risk factors: every 3 years.
  • People with prediabetes: once a year.
  • Diabetics with diabetes with controlled blood glucose: every 2 years.
  • Diabetics who don´t have blood glucose controlled and those whose medication has been modified: every 3 months.

WHICH LEVELS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE WITHIN NORM?

TOTAL CHOLERTEROL LEVEL

  • Normal: less than 200
  • Changes in life style are recommendable: 200-240
  • High level: more than 240

LDL:

  • Normal: less than 130
  • Changes in lifestyle are recommendable: 130-160
  • High level: more than 160

HDL:

  • Normal: more than 60
  • Changes in lifestyle are recommendable: 40-60
  • A very low level, careful!: less than 40

TRIGLYCERIDES:

  • Normal: less than 150
  • Changes in lifestyle are recommendable: 150-200
  • High level: more than 200

FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL

  • Normal: Less than 100
  • Possible prediabetes: 100-125
  • Possible diabetes: more or equal to 126

BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL IN LESS OR EQUAL TO 2 HOURS AFTER EATING

  • Normal: less than 140
  • Possible prediabetes: 140-199
  • Possible diabetes: more or equal to 200

GLYCATED HEMOGLOBIN

  • Normal: between 5 and 5.6
  • Possible prediabetes: 5.7-6.4
  • Possible diabetes: more or equal to 6.5

WHY DOES PROGRÉS PHARMACY RECOMMEND HAVING THESE ANAYLSES DONE?

  • Because we promote prevention and health care.
  • People might not show any symptoms and yet have these levels too high.
  • High sugar level in your blood may slowly damage body organs and cause problems with the oral cavity, eyes or feet and it is one of the risks of developing cardiovascular disease.

DO I HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

Is not necessary, we can carry out the analyses within our opening hours (from 9am to 9pm, Monday through Saturday).

SHOULD I BE FASTING?

Cholesterol analysis: You need to have been fasting at least 8 hours prior to the procedure.
Sugar analysis: You don´t need to be fasting for the first test.
